Original Sound
Independent Film Marketing Across Theatrical & VOD Release
How do you sustain audience momentum from an independent film’s theatrical release into TVOD?
A theatrical opening is only one stage of an independent film’s release. Vanquish Media Group developed an integrated film marketing strategy for Original Sound that connected social storytelling, cast participation, grassroots partnerships, community building, and paid media across theatrical and digital distribution.
The goal was not simply to generate awareness around opening weekend. It was to build an audience that could move with the film from theatrical discovery into its TVOD release.
For filmmakers planning a similar release path, explore how Vanquish approaches independent film marketing across audience development, paid media, grassroots activation, and distribution strategy.

THE OVERVIEW
Building Audience Momentum Across Multiple Release Windows
Original Sound is a music-driven drama set across Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. The story follows gifted beat maker Danny Solis after rising pop star Ryan Reed takes one of his tracks. What begins as a conflict becomes an unexpected collaboration, drawing Danny deeper into the music industry while both artists confront ambition, authenticity, creative ownership, and the cost of success.
Adapted from an acclaimed Cherry Lane Theatre, the film gave the campaign several natural audience entry points: independent film, music culture, New York, Broadway, emerging artists, and fans of its cast.
For Vanquish Media Group, the objective was to extend the exciting early stages of awareness for the April theatrical release, through a multi-month release strategy. The campaign needed to establish an audience, convert that attention into ticketing interest, and then successfully carry the same community into the film’s TVOD release on Apple TV and Amazon.

THE CHALLENGE
Turning Theatrical Awareness Into Long-Term Audience Value
Original Sound required a campaign that could evolve without losing momentum.
During the theatrical phase, the priority was discovery. The campaign needed to introduce audiences to an original independent film, establish its music-world identity, create familiarity with its characters, and generate enough urgency to support a limited theatrical release.
But theatrical awareness had to become something more durable.
Once the film transitioned to TVOD, messaging needed to shift from “see it in theaters” to “watch it now” without making the digital release feel like a second, disconnected campaign.
The film also crossed several audience communities.
Fans of Laura Marano and the wider cast represented one opportunity. Music creators, Broadway audiences, New York communities, indie film viewers, entertainment audiences, and people interested in the creative realities of the music industry represented others.
The marketing challenge was therefore bigger than reach.
It was about finding the audience intersections that could keep the film relevant across several months and several distribution moments.
The challenge was bringing those audiences into one cohesive campaign while continually giving them new reasons to engage as the film moved through its release lifecycle.
OUR SOLUTIONS
An Integrated Theatrical-to-VOD Film Marketing Strategy
Our strategy treated the theatrical and TVOD releases as connected chapters of the same audience journey.
During the theatrical phase, content established the film’s voice through character moments, music-driven scenes, custom videos, branded graphics, TikTok-native creative, press coverage, behind-the-scenes material, cast content, and release-focused messaging. The campaign used the tension at the center of the story, creative ownership, ambition, collaboration, and authenticity, as recurring themes rather than relying only on conventional promotional assets.
Cast and crew participation became a major amplification engine. Laura Marano, David Lambert, Constantine Maroulis, Eric Stoltz, Ari Notartomaso, and other members of the film community supported the campaign through collaborative posts, original content, interviews, livestreams, event participation, reposts, and story shares. Their involvement helped the film move beyond its owned channels and reach established fan communities.
Grassroots outreach expanded that network further. VMG activated influencers, music and film communities, fan pages, press relationships, entertainment accounts, and aligned partners, building hundreds of opportunities for audiences to encounter Original Sound through people and platforms they already followed.
When the campaign transitioned to TVOD, the strategy evolved with it. Social profiles, creative, calls to action, grassroots materials, and messaging shifted toward digital availability while high-performing theatrical content and previously engaged audiences became valuable retargeting opportunities. This allowed the second release phase to build from existing momentum rather than starting again from zero.
Paid media supported both stages with platform-specific roles across Meta, TikTok, and Google/YouTube. Theatrical campaigns focused on awareness, ticketing, and geographic release support, while TVOD campaigns shifted toward direct watch intent, prospecting, remarketing, pre-orders, and release promotions. Performance data continuously informed creative and audience optimization throughout the campaign.

THE RESULTS
Converting Release Momentum Into Higher-Intent Engagement
Original Sound maintained meaningful audience momentum across both theatrical and TVOD release windows rather than relying on a single launch moment.
Social platforms became major discovery channels for the film. Character-driven creative, cast participation, music-focused storytelling, press moments, and trend-aligned content generated millions of views across Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok while continually introducing the film to new audiences.
Grassroots and cast collaborations extended that visibility beyond the film’s owned community. Across the campaign, more than 80 collaborators generated an estimated 650+ collaborations and shares. The theatrical phase alone represented more than 16 million in audience reach, with cast, crew, influencers, press support, and entertainment communities all contributing to the campaign’s visibility.
Paid media added both scale and measurable audience action. Across the theatrical and TVOD phases, Meta consistently produced particularly strong response rates, while TikTok expanded efficient awareness and YouTube supported theatrical video discovery. As the release moved to digital, remarketing and platform-focused audience targeting helped convert established awareness into direct watch interest.
What was the marketing strategy for Original Sound?
Vanquish Media Group used an integrated theatrical-to-TVOD marketing strategy for Original Sound that combined social media, cast participation, grassroots and influencer partnerships, paid media, community development, and remarketing. Instead of restarting the campaign when the film moved from theaters to digital platforms, VMG used the theatrical audience, campaign data, creative assets, and engaged communities to support the TVOD release.
What were the results of the Original Sound marketing campaign?
The Original Sound campaign generated 6 million Instagram views, 3.1 million Facebook views, 3 million TikTok views, more than 389,000 paid-media link clicks, and over 16 million in theatrical grassroots audience reach. More than 80 collaborators contributed an estimated 650+ collaborations and shares across the campaign.
