More Than Miyagi

Documentary Film Marketing & Audience Expansion

How do you market a beloved cultural icon without reducing his story to the role everyone already knows?

Pat Morita became a global icon through Mr. Miyagi, but More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story reveals a much larger, more complicated life.

Vanquish Media Group built a multi-layered film marketing campaign around that broader story, using social media, grassroots collaborations, livestreams, user-generated content, cast participation, and branded creative to expand the documentary beyond The Karate Kid audience and introduce viewers to the man behind the character.

Explore VMG’s broader approach to Film Marketing.

THE OVERVIEW

Expanding the Story Beyond an Iconic Character

More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story examines the life of Oscar-nominated actor Pat Morita, tracing his journey from childhood illness to comedy, television, Hollywood success, discrimination, addiction, and the role that made him internationally recognizable.

The documentary arrived with a built-in cultural advantage. Audiences already knew Mr. Miyagi. Interest in The Karate Kid universe was also experiencing renewed momentum through Cobra Kai, giving the film access to an active and highly engaged fan community.

But that familiarity also created the campaign’s central marketing problem.

If the film was presented only through the lens of Mr. Miyagi, audiences could easily miss the larger story. The campaign therefore needed to use nostalgia as an entry point without allowing nostalgia to become the entire identity of the documentary.

The objective was to broaden audience understanding of Pat Morita while still tapping into the enormous affection audiences already had for his most famous role.

THE CHALLENGE

Moving Audiences Beyond the Character They Already Knew

With an established audience around The Karate Kid and the growing popularity of Cobra Kai, it was important to spotlight Pat Morita’s whole life, including his beginnings in comedy and earlier projects, to give the documentary a more complete identity.

The biggest challenge was familiarity.

Mr. Miyagi gave the campaign instant recognition, but the documentary was not simply a retrospective about one famous role.

Pat Morita’s life included comedy, television, cultural barriers, personal struggles, career setbacks, resilience, and decades of work before and after The Karate Kid.

The campaign therefore had to accomplish two things at once:

Use the audience’s existing emotional connection to Mr. Miyagi while creating curiosity about everything they did not know about Pat Morita.

That distinction became the foundation of the marketing strategy.

Turning Nostalgia Into Broader Discovery

Highlighting engaging clips from Pat’s early career, key clips, and more we were able to brand the film beyond the Karate Kid community.

That distinction was important.

The campaign did not ask audiences to forget Mr. Miyagi. It gave them a reason to discover the man behind him. The documentary ultimately earned strong critical reception, including a 100% Tomatometer score from 12 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
