Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain’s Journey

Documentary Film Marketing & Community Audience Development

How do you turn a mission-driven documentary into a digital release that reaches far beyond its core audience?

Purpose-driven films often begin with passionate built-in communities. The larger marketing opportunity is finding the emotional themes that can carry the story beyond them.

For Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain’s Journey, Vanquish Media Group combined social storytelling, grassroots partnerships, community engagement, paid media, and partner amplification to support the film’s VOD release, grow its digital audience, and connect its stories of courage, sacrifice, faith, and service with viewers at scale.

THE OVERVIEW

Expanding a Mission-Driven Film From Built-In Community to Broader Discovery

Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain’s Journey explores the extraordinary role of U.S. military chaplains throughout American history, men and women who enter conflict without weapons and provide spiritual and emotional support to service members of all faiths.

The documentary follows a former Army chaplain whose journey intersects with stories of remarkable figures from military history, including the Four Chaplains of the U.S.S. Dorchester, a former Army Ranger who later became a chaplain, and Father Emil Kapaun, whose remains were identified and returned home decades after his death as a prisoner of war.

Following its 2024 theatrical release, the film moved into a new challenge: turning existing awareness into digital discovery and VOD action.

The May 2025 campaign needed to activate the film’s established military and faith-based communities while introducing the documentary to new audiences on Instagram, Facebook, and digital viewing platforms.

The objective was not simply to announce that the film was available.

It was to build a digital campaign capable of generating awareness, engagement, pre-orders, sales, and long-term audience growth around the release.

THE CHALLENGE

Expanding the Audience Without Losing the Meaning Behind the Film

Fighting Spirit had a strong emotional foundation and several clearly aligned communities.

Military families, veterans, faith organizations, chaplain networks, and audiences interested in American military history already had natural reasons to connect with the film.

But relying only on those audiences would limit the campaign’s potential.

The challenge was to make the documentary accessible to viewers who may never have thought about the role of combat chaplains—and who might not immediately see the story as relevant to their own lives.

The marketing needed to communicate something broader:

These were not simply military stories or faith stories.

They were stories about courage, sacrifice, service, leadership, grief, resilience, and being present for someone during their most difficult moments.

The transition to VOD created another challenge.

Unlike a theatrical release built around a specific date and location, digital availability required sustained discovery. The campaign needed to create enough repeated exposure and audience action to move viewers from awareness to renting, buying, or pre-ordering the film.

That required combining the credibility of trusted communities with the scale of social and paid media.

OUR SOLUTIONS

Building the VOD Campaign Around Trust, Community, and Human Connection

To bring Fighting Spirit to life in the hearts of audiences, we devised a multi-faceted campaign that leveraged storytelling, collaboration, and targeted engagement. Anchoring the strategy were deeply resonant themes of hope, faith, and resilience, which were woven into every piece of content. From stirring video teasers to testimonials from cast members, the campaign focused on creating an emotional connection.

Social media platforms served as the battleground for engagement. A robust calendar of posts, including behind-the-scenes clips and tailored graphics, ensured consistent visibility. Collaborations with influencers and organizations amplified the campaign’s reach, connecting the film with diverse and highly engaged communities. Grassroots efforts played a pivotal role, with curated lists of over 300 collaborators helping to drive buzz. High-profile figures like Chris Pratt lent their voices to the effort. Faith-based organizations and veteran communities became rallying points for organic discussions and shares.

Meanwhile, paid media efforts strategically targeted lookalike audiences and retargeted engaged viewers to maximize reach and conversions. These efforts not only captured the attention of military families and faith-based groups. They also intrigued broader demographics who were drawn to the universal themes of courage and service.

THE RESULTS

Turning Community Support Into Scalable Digital Release Momentum

The VOD campaign transformed an already meaningful documentary into a much larger digital audience opportunity.

Social media generated millions of views while giving the film an active home for conversation, testimonials, release updates, press, and community participation.

Instagram alone delivered 2.5M+ views, 1.2M+ reach, 1.4M+ impressions, and 41.5K+ content interactions during the reporting period. Facebook added more than 1.03M views, 433K+ reach, and 52.7K+ link clicks.

Grassroots activation became one of the campaign’s most valuable assets.

More than 40 confirmed collaborators and an estimated 120+ collaborations expanded the film into military, veteran, faith, and community networks, producing 49.77 million in confirmed audience reach.

Paid media then converted that awareness into direct VOD traffic, producing 101,479 link clicks from 1.4M+ impressions at a 7.44% click-through rate.

Most importantly, the campaign shows what happens when distribution and audience strategy work together.

The film already had communities with a meaningful reason to support its mission. VMG’s role was to organize that support, expand it, and connect it with a digital campaign capable of driving measurable audience action.

Instead of treating VOD as simply the next place the film became available, the campaign turned it into another audience-building moment.
